Some steps that I'd recommend when wanting to get hired are:
1) Maximize your impact with active participation. Following up after applying or completing an interview. Knowing what type of job you are looking for. Be self-aware and know your strengths and weaknesses.
2) Let your passion shine through & be your genuine self. Skills can be taught, but employers want to see passion and enthusiasm when considering applicants.
3) Recognize and embrace the true value of your talents.
4) Seek constructive feedback on your applications.
5) Dive into researching about the company.
6) It never hurts to have references; this is helpful because people attest to the skills and experiences you (the candidate) have listed on your resume.
